About the Project
What We’re Doing
We’re preparing a Utility Thermal Energy Network (UTEN) demonstration project project in Ruby Hill. The demonstration project connects multiple buildings to a shared geothermal water loop that exchanges heat with the ground. Buildings use ultra-efficient heat pumps to heat and cool their facility from the geothermal loop. Heating is highly efficient, requires no combustion, and avoids the price fluctuation of natural gas.
Why Ruby Hill?
Ruby Hill was selected based on geothermal potential and feasibility indicators such as density and age of the building stock. In addition to Xcel Energy’s sustainability goals, which include reducing carbon emissions from electricity 80% by 2030 and providing 100% carbon free electricity by 2050, the City and County of Denver has established clear climate goals, strong building performance policies, and funding tools that encourage electrification. Denver’s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability & Resiliency (CASR) has set citywide greenhouse gas reduction targets and timelines for net zero buildings. The city’s Energize Denver performance policy and the 2022 Denver Energy Code advance heat pump adoption and net zero design. The city’s 100% Renewable Electricity Plan complements electrified heating and cooling. Ruby Hill is also part of the Southwest Area Plan vision, which provides a neighborhood context for infrastructure coordination and community engagement. Together, these elements make Ruby Hill a strong place to evaluate a utility thermal energy network and to invite interested residents to participate.
Map of Area Under Consideration
Check the map to see if your address is in the preliminary study area. If you are inside the area, let us know you’re interested. If you are outside, you can still sign up for updates and let us know you want to be included in the next phase.
The Ruby Hill UTEN Area includes the blocks between West Mexico Avenue and West Colorado Avenue and between South Clay Street and South Zuni Street, including properties on both sides of all four streets.
